The non-consensual sharing, threatening to share, or creation of intimate images can be deeply distressing and damaging. Often referred to as “revenge porn”, this type of conduct is better understood as intimate image abuse. It is not limited to former partners and does not always involve revenge, but tends to be used to humiliate, control, blackmail, threaten, or intimidate a victim.
Intimate image abuse can take many forms, including the sharing or publication of private photographs or videos without consent, as well as threats to distribute such material to family members, friends, employers or colleagues. It may also involve the use of intimate images as a form of coercion or control, where individuals are pressured into meeting demands under threat of exposure.
In some cases, the abuse extends to fabricated or manipulated content, including sexualised images created or altered without consent, such as AI-generated “deepfake” material. This conduct can occur across a wide range of platforms, including social media, messaging apps, email, forums, adult websites and private group chats, often making it difficult to contain once it has been shared.
Intimate Images & The Law
In certain circumstances in England and Wales, it is a criminal offence to share, or threaten to share, an intimate photograph or film without consent. The law also addresses various forms of image-based abuse involving fake or AI-generated intimate images. Depending on the facts of the case, related conduct may also amount to harassment, stalking, blackmail, misuse of private information, breach of confidence, data protection breaches, or defamation.
Victims should act quickly as online material can spread rapidly and may be copied, reposted or circulated across multiple platforms. Evidence should be preserved, including saving screenshots of the images or threats, usernames, profile links, dates and times, URLs, messages, comments, shares, views, and any demands made. It is also important not to engage with the perpetrator, as this may escalate the situation or affect future legal steps.
Legal action may include urgent requests for removal, reports to online platforms, cease-and-desist correspondence, applications for injunctions, claims for damages, and, where criminal conduct is involved, referrals to the police. In serious cases, swift action may be required to prevent further publication or wider sharing.
